History
WNSF was conceived in 1999 during The National Town Meeting for a Sustainable America, sponsored by of the President’s Council on Sustainable Development (PCSD) and the Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF). The organization was registered as a 501(c) 3 in 2000.

Why Women?
Research shows that women as a whole have a particularly strong commitment to the three components of sustainability– economic, environmental and social. Businesswomen believe they benefit from a network of like-minded executives to move sustainability initiatives forward.

Funding History and Support
In 2003, WNSF received a Ford Foundation grant, garnering additional funds from the Nathan Cummings Foundation and companies including AT&T, and Swiss Re. Support continues to grow from corporate, academic, government and NGO organizations. Additional support is gratefully acknowledged from many companies including Adobe Systems, Applied Materials, Alcoa, Citigroup, The Coca-Cola Company, Con Edison, Deutsche Bank, Deloitte Touche, Dow Jones, DuPont, Eileen Fisher, GE, Goldman Sachs, Herman Miller, IBM, Intel, Interface, JPMorgan Chase, Levi-Strauss, McGraw-Hill, McKinsey, Mitsubishi, Merrill Lynch, Microsoft, Novartis, Ogilvy & Mather, Pfizer, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Siemens, Starbucks, Symantec, UBS, Wal-Mart, and Whole Foods.
